My photography gear

In this article, I share the photography gear I currently use for my professional work as a landscape photographer as well as for personal projects : camera body, lenses, accessories and my camera bag. Every piece of equipment I use is the result of real field experience, travel constraints and my approach to landscape photography.

My camera body

I’ve been shooting with Nikon since 2020. I had the D700 and D750, before selling them and upgrading to Nikon’s new Z mirrorless line in 2024.

I use the Nikon Z8 and it’s an absolute power monster. It’s a full-frame mirrorless camera with a 45,7 megapixel sensor. I use it for both photography and video (it shoots 8K 60fps !), for landscapes, wildlife and portraits. Perfect autofocus, incredible burst-mode, outstanding image quality for prints… I wouldn’t go back for anything in the world !

My lenses

Right now I own three lenses, and iI take all of them with me whenever I travel.

  • Sigma 14mm f/1.8 : a very fast ultra-wide prime lens. It’s one of my favorite lenses for nature photography. I mainly use it for landscapes and astrophotography (northern lights, Milky Way, meteor showers…).

  • Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 : a very versatile lens, perfect for both portraits and landscapes. The f/2.8 aperture gives a creamy bokeh and good low-light performance. This is the lens that stays mounted on my camera most of the time.

  • Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 : a perfect lens for tight portraits and wildlife photography. I often use it with the TC-20-E III x2 teleconverter which doubles the focal lenght. That’s very useful, my 70-200mm f/2.8 becomes a 140-400mm f/5.6 without having to break the bank or my back carrying heavy gear !

My drone

I’ve been using the DJi Mavic 3 classic since 2022. It features a high-resolution camera, excellent flight performance and stunning image quality. I’ve had photos printed in 2mx3m and there were perfect ! It handles very well strong winds and offers long battery life (up to 40 minutes), making it one of the best tools for capturing epic landscapes and smooth cinematic footage. I take it everywhere with me !

I bought it with the Fly More Bundle to get extra batteries and spare propellers, which is essential for stress-free flights. Additionally, I also recommend the DJi Care Refresh, it’s DJi’s insurance plan. I had to use it a few times and it allows me to fly with peace of mind.

For the drone I use DJi ND filters to reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor, it’s very useful when filming LOG. I also own a Polarpro polarizing filter (no longer available) to reduce light reflection on water and enhance colors and contrast.

Essential photography accessories

Tripods

I use a Leofoto Ranger LS-324C, a tripod known for its reliability and high-quality materials. It’s made of carbon fiber (lightweight and sturdy), uses a twist-lock system and adapts to almost any outdoor situation. Customer service is excellent, nothing to complain about.

For my phone, I use a small flexible tripod from Lammcou, which wraps around almost anything and works with smartphones and GoPros.

External hard drives

When traveling, I use Samsung external SSDs. They’re compact, shock-resistant and the 2TB capacity allows me to back up my files safely on the road.

They’re fast, reliable, and perfect for large photo and video files (drone footage gets heavy 😉). An essential companion for any traveling photographer !

SD cards

I use several SanDisk SD cards : one 256GB permanently in my camera and several 128GB backups in my backpack. They’re robust and offer fast write speeds (up to 200 MB/s).

For the drone, I use a 128GB SanDisk microSD card.

I always carry multiple cards in case of technical issues (trust me, it happens !) and because they fill up quickly. Multiplying your back-ups when traveling is the key for a safe trip.

ND filters

I use Kase ND filters and I’m very happy with them. They reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor, allowing me to shoot long exposures during the day.

They come in different densities and use a magnetic mount, so I can attach them in seconds. They’re durable and perfect for outdoor use. Just make sure to check lens diameter compatibility before buying.

Cleaning kit : more particularly air blowers to remove dust from my camera and lenses. I also use a Kuuzuse sensor cleaning kit (I forgot to take a proper photo). Very handy to clean your gear in the field or while traveling. The Nikon Z8 has shutter that closes when changing lenses which helps a lot, but I still use the blower.

Walkies-talkies

Okay maybe you’ll laugh but I use them very regularly ! When shooting with someone else in remote areas without cell service, they’re incredibly useful. They’re also great if one person is acting as a model and hand signals aren’t enough (speaking from experience).

I use Motorola walkie-talkies. They cost around 70€, have excellent range and are surprisingly powerful despite looking like toys. I tested them on a 10km (flat) plateau just for fun and although it was a bit difficult to hear each other, it still worked fine. Smaller distances are working perfectly !

My camera bag

I invested in a Wandrd FERNWEH 31L camera backpack. It’s well designed, comfortable, and offers modular compartments to adapt to different setups, plus plenty of pockets for cables, SD cards, and filters. Mine didn’t originally come with a hip belt, but I added one later and it saved my back on hikes. It’s discreet, waterproof, well padded, and fits in overhead bins on most airlines, a huge plus for travel. It doesn’t scream “I’m carrying expensive equipment” when you’re in the city or traveling, which I think is amazing.

Now you know everything I carry with me ! But there is one thing I really want to emphasize : even though I now work with professional gear, I strongly believe that equipment does not make a great photo. Composition, light, intention, and patience will always matter more than the brand of your camera. In my opinion, spending thousands of euros makes no sense if you don’t master the basics. A smartphone or an entry-level camera is more than enough to learn how to compose and tell a story. Always invest time first : observe, practice, fail, and try again. Gear should serve your vision, never replace it.
